The CM wants to establish Andhra Pradesh state as the role model for digital transformation. This would be achieved by empowering every resident of the state with affordable internet access and high-speed broadband for the local businesses for fostering innovation.AP FiberNet

“Digital transformation has emerged as the most transformative means to ignite sustainable growth and improve society. My vision for the state is to digitally empower every citizen, enhance quality of life of citizens, accelerate economic competitiveness, boost local innovation and become a knowledge and technology hub of the country. Digital Andhra Pradesh is a step towards realising that vision. We envision Andhra Pradesh as a role model for digital transformation for other states to follow. We are happy to partner with Cisco for this transformative project and we believe Cisco’s global experience and expertise in digitization will benefit Andhra Pradesh immensely and catapult the state to the forefront of the digital revolution,” the CM added.

Separate Plans for Households and Workplaces

AP FiberNet will offer low-cost high-speed broadband to all the households and workplaces in the state. The government has announced just 2 plans for AP FiberNet. 15 Mbps plan for households costing Rs. 149/ month, and a 100 Mbps plan for workplaces @ Rs. 999/month.

It is worth noting that these plans are priced at a much cheaper rate than the current market rate of similar broadband plans. Andhra Pradesh govt. has also signed an MoU with Cisco as a part of India’s first state-wide broadband project.

In order to reduce the installation costs and for providing the broadband facility at a much cheaper rate to the public, it would be deployed via overhead electric poles, and not like the traditional underground cables.

“Cisco will set up an Internet of Everything (IoE) Innovation Centre in Visakhapatnam to foster regional innovation and will enable partners and startups to build solutions around IoE and engage in rapid prototyping,” said John T Chambers.

As per the current information, connections would be rolled out to households and workplaces by April 2016 in the cities of Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, and Vizianagaram. The rest of the state would be covered by the end of July 2016.

It is good to see AP government take such initiatives for the welfare of its residents. This will not only improve the quality of life in the state would also disrupt the local broadband market. It would be interesting to see the incumbent players reacting to such cheap broadband plans. What are your thoughts about this?
