Increasing Incidents of Respiratory Ailments in Metro Cities and Rising Levels of PM2.5 Pollutants are Stimulating the Demand for Air Purifiers: Ken Research

Increasing Pollution and Health Consciousness: India was the fifth most polluted country and home to 21 out of world’s top 30 most polluted cities in 2019. The rising levels of hazardous pollutants such as PM2.5 in metro cities and increasing incidents of respiratory ailments such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Asthma and more is leading to people investing in air purifiers. Consumers are increasingly becoming health consciousness and with higher disposable incomes, their propensity to spend on health-related gadgets has witnessed growth in the last few years.

North India Dominating Sales: Delhi-NCR is one of the most polluted regions in India. Most companies witness year-end spike in sales in this region due to worsening air quality around festival season of Diwali and stubble burning in neighboring states. The AQI in Delhi in December 2019 reached 404, which is hazardous for human health Besides Delhi-NCR, tier-2 cities with severe air quality such as Lucknow & Kanpur and Chandigarh are also contributing to rising sales. Air purifier sales continue to be skewed towards the end of the year from October to December.

Surge in Residential Demand: The residential consumers are the largest end-users of air purifier in the country. The rich & upper middle class household accounted for ~24% of the total number of households in India in 2019, which form the major target audience for the product. Factors such as price, functionality, recommendations, brand value & others guide the purchase decision of residential consumers.

Covid-19 Impact:  The Air Purifier industry in India is expected to face a momentary decline in sales in FY’2021 due to the imposed lockdown & halt in retail sales during the period and reduced pollution levels. The pandemic has also brought global trade to a standstill which would compel air purifier companies to resort to existing inventory in the absence of air purifiers being imported. However, the industry is expected to witness steady recovery in the following financial year owing to rising health & safety concerns and an anticipated spike in online sales as a spillover of the pandemic due to continued fear of physical contact among people.

Analysts at Ken Research in their latest publication “India Air Purifier Industry Outlook to FY’2025- Driven by Deteriorating Air Quality and Rising Disposable Incomes observed that the increasing disposable income and incidents of respiratory diseases in metro cities is driving the demand for air purifiers. Innovation in product design and features, comprehensive marketing strategies, wider distribution networks and increasing adopting in other major and tier-2 cities is expected to drive the demand in the industry in the future. The India Air Purifier industry in terms of revenue is expected to grow at a CAGR of ~20.2% during the period FY’2020 – FY’2025.
