Self-contained breathing apparatus or SCBA is a device that contains breathable compressed air used by the firefighters and rescue workers to protect their respiratory system from super-heated atmospheres, toxic gases, and other hazards attendant with an atmosphere that is Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).  The primary function of the SCBA is to remove carbon dioxide produced by the body, supply oxygen for normal breathing, and increase the supply during exertion. Closed circuit SCBA is an apparatus, designed to protect personnel in toxic, hazardous, or oxygen- deficient environments. It recirculates breathing air and purifies it by removing carbon dioxide and adding fresh oxygen. It is generally used in the mining industry as it is suitable for the applications where a breathing gas is mandatory for a longer duration. It has two basic gas-passage configurations: the loop and the pendulum. The loop configuration consists of gas-tight loop for responder’s exhalation & inhalation and used for emergency responder applications while pendulum configuration is used for underwater diving.

According to study, “Global Closed-Circuit SCBA Market Status (2015-2019) and Forecast (2020-2024) by Region, Product Type & End-Use” the key companies operating in the global closed-circuit SCBA market are MSA, Interspiro, Scott Safety, Shigematsu, Honeywell, Matisec, Drager, Sinoma, Cam Lock, Koken, Avon. The constant need for innovation and development due to increasing user expectation & shifting Health and Safety regulations has forced CC-SCBA manufacturers to gradually spend on research & development (R&D) in order to develop efficient products. Manufacturers are also using highly adaptable technologies in SCBA which is improving the precision of the device, thus fuelling the growth of the market.

Based on product type, closed-circuit SCBA market is segmented into low pressure open-circuit SCBA and high pressure open-circuit SCBA. In addition, based on end-users, market is segmented into industrial use, firefighting and others.

The closed-circuit SCBA market is driven by rise in occurrences of fire hazards, followed by increase in demand from fire services and rise in demand of safety equipment in fields for instance rescue operations, ironworks, nuclear facilities, fire stations, and chemical plants. However, limited service life & duration of air supply and training required for their safe use or maintenance may impact the market. Moreover, growth in instances of injuries including severe abrasions, punctures, thermal and chemical burns is a key opportunity for market.

Based on geography, the North-American region holds major share in closed-circuit SCBA market owing to growth in requirement for high-utility protective equipment, presence of a large number of players and rise in number of developing techniques & equipment in the region. Whereas, the European and Asian-Pacific regions are predicted to exhibit higher CAGR due to increase in number of occupational injuries and growth in industrial construction over the forecast period. In upcoming years, it is expected that future of the market will be bright n account of high spending on modern technologies along with encouraging of new medical devices during the forecast period. Moreover, global manufacturers are likely to establish their production facilities in the developing countries of Asia Pacific due to low production costs.
