Key Findings

  • Steel Industry which is the largest producer as well as end user for the industrial gas was affected in 2020, due to lockdown imposed in the country.
  • Out of all the 8 core industries, manufacturing, mining and electrical industry are the most important end user of the industrial gases industry.

Impact of Covid-19: Lockdown and the corresponding restrictions on local and global movement of people and goods, except for essential goods and services, was an exogenous shock to the Industry and led to massive growth in demand for liquid medical oxygen. Rise in demand led to a fluctuation in the price of Oxygen Gas.

Unlocking of the economy in a phased manner has helped the economy to get back on its feet. India implemented policies aimed at reducing transaction costs. The Policy of Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. It was aimed at fostering the competition, providing sustenance and security to MSMEs (Medium Small and Micro Enterprises).

Emerging Trends in Industrial Gases Industry: By the end of the first quarter of 2020, the IIP saw one of the steepest falls in the history of Indian Industry. This brought a lot of uncertainty in the Industry, especially Industrial Gases which is a feeder for Steel and other Industrial manufacturing. By early onset of second wave, the Oxygen Industry faced a sudden surge of Demand for Oxygen which leads to a boost in the Industrial Gases Industry. Over the years there has been a long growth in the credit facility extended by the banks to the Industry which underlines the foundation of financial strength of the country. The gross credit of the facility extended to the sector in interest was 3.4% year –on-year bases in 2019 October but was pushed into dive with a negative 1.7% growth in October 2020.
