Italy Seed Industry Research Report: Ken Research

The growth in the seed industry of Italy can be attributed to the increase in consumption of cereal crops, increase in demand for organically produced food products and progressive policies adopted by the government.

Majority of the demand in the Italian seed market is for cereal crops like durum wheat, common wheat, barley, maize and rice. There is high demand for clover, sugar beet, sunflower and potato seeds as well. The use of genetically modified crops is restricted in Italy. Italy is largely an importer of seeds and majority of the seeds are imported from within the European Union countries. The key growth drivers of the seed market have been the high production of durum & common wheat. Italy is one of the largest producer and exporter of pasta in the world; export of such food products has supported the growth in the seed market to a great extent. The total land used for agriculture has decreased over the years however owing to the use of newer hybrid seeds the total yield per hectare has increased. These seeds are resistant to local diseases and pests and have therefore become popular among farmers.

The Italian seed market has presence of major global players like DuPont, Monsanto, Syngenta, Rijk Zwaan. These companies largely dominate the Italian seed market. Most of the Indigenous players in the market majorly produce seeds for vegetables and herbs. These local companies are also focusing on breeding seeds that are specifically suited for agricultural conditions in Italy.  The demand for organic food products in the country has substantially grown in recent years. The number of organic farms in the country is gradually increasing and this has supported the growth of the seed market in the country.

The report titled “Italy Seed Market by Technology Type (Open Pollinated and Hybrid Seeds) by Crop Type (Corn, Wheat, Barley, Oats, Oilseeds, Forage, Vegetable, Fruit, Flower and Grass Seeds) – Outlook to 2022” by Ken Research suggested a growth at a positive CAGR in revenues in Italy seed market due to increase in research and breeding programmes by companies, increase in organic farming and growth in production of food products in the next 5 years till 2022.
