Philippines Cold Chain Market Driven by Growing Demand for Processed Foods and Changing Lifestyle of Filipinos Albeit Increasing Electricity Consumption Rates and Inadequate Infrastructure: Ken Research

“Rising consumption of processed frozen foods augmenting the business of companies such as Magnolia, Papa Diddi’s and Unilever RFM to name a few have driven the cold chain business of Philippines”

Rise in Dining at Restaurants: The millennial population in the Philippines actively eats at restaurants. Young diners have been observed to consume 1 of every 3 breakfasts, half of their lunches and a minimum of 4 of 10 dinners, away from home. On a monthly basis, 85% millennial source food from fast-food restaurants, 82% from street-food kiosks or carts, 81% from office-building cafeterias, 80% from prepared-foods areas at retail stores, 76% from cafes specializing in beverages and baked goods, 74% from sit-down restaurants and 56% from vending machines. In addition to this, Filipinos have adopted the habit of prior reservations before actually visiting the restaurants. This has bolstered the business of companies such as Booky, Zomato and Eatigo as well.

Increasing Demand for Processed Foods: Demand for processed frozen foods has grown in the country including frozen yogurts and ice-creams requiring freezers during the review period 2014 to 2019. The demand is mostly met by companies such as Papa Diddi’s, Merry Moo, Ambassador’s Vegan Ice Cream, Sebastian’s and Carmen’s Best. The growing frozen dessert sector and increasing consumption levels of frozen patties, pizzas and nuggets pose great opportunities for companies to expand operations and meet the rising demand of the nation.

Lack of Adequate Infrastructure: Cold chain supply management depends on the quality of the infrastructure systems in the country. Purpose of cold chain logistics is to deliver perishable and temperature-sensitive foods, chemicals and pharmaceuticals maintaining quality and shelf life of the product. Inadequate infrastructure in the Philippines has become a hindrance to the progress of the cold chain industry. As per the Global Competitiveness Report 2019 published by World Economic Forum, Philippines ranked at 96th position in terms of ‘Infrastructure’ is much lower than its Southeast Asian counterparts such as Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Laos.

Analysts at Ken Research in their latest the publication Philippines Cold Chain Market Outlook to 2025: Driven by Rising Processed Food Consumption Owing to Growing Millennial Population Albeit Infrastructure Challenges observed that the market in the Philippines is presently in the growth stage since the year 2002. It has indicated a year-on-year increase owing to rise in dining at cafes and restaurants majorly by growing millennial population, rising per capita income and increasing consumption of frozen and processed foods ice-cream and yogurts, nuggets, fries and other ready-to-eat meals. Thus, the Philippines cold storage market by revenue was observed to grow at a CAGR of 12.7% during the period 2014-2019.
