How Ophthalmology is growing in Thailand

The population of Thailand has long been impacted by eye diseases including Cataract, Refractive Error, Glaucoma, Pterygium and Conjunctivitis among others. The country actually set its sights on 2020 and formed a Vision 2020 plan, to improve the ophthalmic care landscape in the country, and reduce the incidence rate of untreated eye ailments and disorders.

Thailand has a total of ~ ophthalmologists, registered under the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, which is the official association of Ophthalmologists in Thailand. The College mandates the ophthalmology curriculum and conducts the Thai Board of Ophthalmology examinations. It also mandates the good practice standards for ophthalmologists around the country. It also undertakes measures for prevention of blindness and promotion of eye care in collaboration with both governmental and non-governmental organizations.

The demand for ophthalmic care has been majorly stimulated due to a rise in the incidence of eye ailments and diseases among the Thai population. Ailments/Diseases such as Cataract, Refractive Error, Glaucoma and Retina-related diseases have been pretty common across all segments of the Thai population, from children to the elderly. Moreover, the incidence of eye diseases is higher among the elderly in Thailand, whose size is indicated by the ever increasing life expectancy rate in the country. Elderly people also suffering from other ailments such as diabetes contract retina-related diseases and age-related macular degeneration. These diseases require detailed eye surgical operations conducted by specialized ophthalmologists.

There has also been a growth in eye consultations along with eye surgeries, which has directly translated to revenue growth for ophthalmology in the country. Ophthalmology clinics have also increasingly started to sell eye-wear products, which has emerged as an additional revenue stream for clinics.
